    My tank

Really, really nice. You do have a very artistic edge to your presentations. Tell me about the process. Do you see this in your mind first, then work to create it? Or is just a free flow as you move things around. I have this vision of you doodling sketches before you get started.

    Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish Question

Neon Rainbows very rarely show any aggression at all. You should be just fine.

    Jay's Planted 180g Tank.

Hey Jay good to see an update. The tank looks beautiful as always. You have the largest Anubias hedge I have seen. Interesting that you cut down on the light. How long are you running the two lights? Did you rearrange them to the middle of the tank? Seems like the trouble might be good coverage...

    API Filstar xp-L (3) or API Filstar xp-XL (4)??

First of all, like others have said, you can probably fix it easily. I have two Rena XP3's that are over ten years old. Parts are readily available. Google them and there is a number you can call to speak to someone. They will be very helpful. While you are at it, buy the gasket kit. Always good...

    GreggZ's Planted Rainbow Tank

Post a pic sometime and maybe I can help. Keep in mind, if it's a female, growth is even slower and it won't really ever color up much.

My sink is 35' from the tank. I use a Quiet One 4000 and a garden hose to pump the water out, then just attach the hose to sink to fill. Really makes things easy, and saves a lot of time. It's in the tray because it stays under the tank in the stand need to catch any drips.

Agree with above. Not too scientific. I run the water over my hand, and usually end up with 2-3 degrees off at most on the low side. Funny how sensitive your hand can get after a good many years.

    Planted tank with no co2??

Let me expand a little on my earlier comment. Let's say you have one T8 bulb over a low tech tank. Duration probably doesn't matter very much, and changes will have minor effect. In fact, you may require longer duration for growth. Let's say you go to twin T5NO. Duration will have more effect...

    Planted tank with no co2??

Agree with Freshy above......depends on many things. In general, the same lights suitable for low tech would not be suitable for high tech. Effects of too high intensity on low tech tank generally can't be overcome by limiting duration. Better to set everything up for one or the other.

    Unexplained deaths in established tank

Good questions. Even scrubbing with a sponge could be bad. Most sponges and some soaps contain anti-microbial agents which are dangerous to a tank. You will actually see fine print on sponges with anti-microbials state "not safe for aquariums" right on the package. All my buckets and such only...

    Unexplained deaths in established tank

Very unlikely your parameters changed enough to make that happen. Did you introduce anything else into the tank? Clean with anything new? Perform any other actions or maintenance? In my experience, scenarios like you describe are usually induced by an event of some kind. I would do several...

    Planted tank with no co2??

Not having co2 does not necessarily mean you will have algae. If you keep the light intensity and duration within reason, there is a balance which will work. Of course, this will work best with low light plants. If you start with plants that like higher light (most stems), and give them the...

    Back in the trenches......

I use two Hydor in line heaters. They are both plugged into a Hydor Hydroset Thermostat. Think of it as an extra layer of protection. If the temp gets higher than specified, it shuts off power to the units. I set it a couple of degrees higher than the heaters. So far it's never had to shut...

    Planted tank with no co2??

Agree with this. The only thing I would add is be careful.....too much light is your enemy. Easy to start an algae farm. Slow steady growth is what you want. And do post pics!

    GreggZ's Planted Rainbow Tank

Thanks Jay.....I only took about 40 to get that one good one. Rainbows don't exactly sit still for the camera.

    GreggZ's Planted Rainbow Tank

Only three clown loaches. They pretty much hang out together around and under the big driftwood in the center of the tank. They are about 3 years old. One must be a runt, because he hasn't ever really grown too much. At some point I will trade them in and start over with some little ones. As...

    GreggZ's Planted Rainbow Tank

Always fun to add new fish. With Rainbows it helps to know something about the breeder and lineage. A species can look quite different at maturity depending on the blood lines. I was able to get a couple of small F2 Bleheri Rainbow fish (Chilatherina bleheri). At only a little over two inches...
