    15 gallon hex journal

Thanks! It's good to know there are others finding their way back to the hobby. And congrats on getting the wifey hooked! I'm still warming my wife up to the idea as I work on the tank at my shop. =) I'm sure she'll come around.

    15 gallon hex journal

This is all good to know. I still have a lot to think about in the setup. I'll have to do more research on the plants you guys mentioned. I do want to eventually have a pretty good groundcover, but I know that in this tank that's going to take a lot of patience. It's a good idea to start...

    15 gallon hex journal

Wow. I really appreciate you taking the time to type all that out. I'll have to go back and reread it a couple times to digest it all fully. Initially, now I'm thinking of doing one of the nutritious aquasoils with a top layer of sand for the substrate. It could look really cool, and seems...

    15 gallon hex journal

These are good things to think about. For the substrate, I've been doing research into quasi-walstead tanks, and from what I've been reading the deeper bed of substrate is good for helping to keep the water chemistry in check and helps to bring more nutrients to the plants that are root...

    15 gallon hex journal

So the tank seems to be holding water fine, and looks much better after cleaning up the outside some. I've ordered a filter (AC30) and plan to run an extended intake pipe on it so I shouldn't have to fuss with a sponge filter too. The next step will be substrate and some plants. I'm thinking...

    15 gallon hex journal

Hi all, It's been ages since I've logged in here because it's been ages since I've had a tank set up. So recently while cleaning out my shed I found an old 15 gallon hex tank. I'm currently testing it for leaks, so it'll be at least a couple of weeks before I really move forward with it (plus...

    AC Mafia Check In

Just logged in for the first time in ages to post about planning to set up a new tank and I come across this. Nice to see some of the old family still around! Things are good here. Got married, moved a couple of times and changed careers yet again. RB... Mad was never innocent. Even when he...

Adding fish to a new tank

There's really nothing more you need to do unless you're seeing ammonia or nitrite in the tank. Are you seeing these? What are your readings? If you are not seeing them, then add fish slowly and continue to monitor.

Adding fish to a new tank

This is the question you need to answer at this point. If the tank is cycled then you're good to add fish slowly. If not, then it will take more time. Your water parameters are the best guide at this point.

Adding fish to a new tank

If you're planning to do a fish in cycle, I think your plan is a little aggressive. You'll be better off to keep a minimal number of fish in the tank until the cycle completes. Then you can begin to add more. This will keep the danger of ammonia spikes, etc to a minimum. You're probably...

    New tank journal

Ok... things seem to be back on track. I picked up a new ammonia test kit, and have had no further deaths. Everyone seems to be active and healthy! I checked out an internet vendor thanks to a recommendation from a fellow member here, and have ordered a school of 12 of the blue-eyed red...

    New tank journal

That's good info, thanks! I may just stop in and pick up a new test kit to test against the old one. The kit I have was not new, it came with the tank. I have no idea how old it may be.

    New tank journal

Well, I got home today to find the injured cory dead. Along with him was a neon and one of the red neon rainbows. I'm starting to feel like the grim reaper over here. The odd thing is there's not a trace of ammonia in the tank. I'm starting to wonder if my test kit is trustworthy. I tore the...

It's nice when vendors do what they say

Glad to hear of a good vendor experience. Any chance you could pm the name to me if you can't put it in the thread?

    New tank journal

I'll try to get some pics, but these guys are tiny (about 3/4") and never stop moving! I don't seem to be able to catch a break with this tank... now I've got a panda cory with a shredded rear fin. I can't figure out who could have assaulted him.

    New tank journal

Ok, so between Friday and Sunday I lost 4 neons. Water params are good, I don't know what happened save to say that they're neons and just not that hardy. I've read that if they get past 2 weeks or so they're bullet proof, which seems to bear out in my tank. So no more of them. I've got 4 in...

    New tank journal

I have thought about both the betta and blue rams. I like both ideas, just wanted to put it out there to see if I could find something I haven't kept before. I'll have to see if I can find some cpd's. I think they would be a cool addition to this tank.

    New tank journal

Aaaaaand, we're back. Sorry it's been so long since an update. The last couple of weeks have been crazy busy! So the tank is doing well. While I was gone, the kid did a great job of feeding and keeping an eye on everyone, and I'm happy to say there were no incidents. So I've added a few...
