Latest picture Latest picture with hood, HOB filter and pool filter sand substrate. Photo also shows the holes that were cut with a Dremel (on the left) to help water flow.

    10g slate background

Right now I in the process of improving circulation by cutting/grinding some of the slate at the top of the section in front of the overflow. It will take a few more days as I am using a Dremel. Once that is done I'll have to clean out all the stone dust, tweak circulation and then add gravel...

    10g slate background

I immersed about 48 hours after the last piece was glued. With that said the glue is supposed to cure within 2 hours. Regarding safety of the glue, I'll still be stocking slowly to ensure things are ok.

    10g slate background

Filled it with water and noted an oversight on my part. I meant to leave more room near the top of the foam gap where the filter returns the water. I tested the flow using potassium permanganate to dye the water and noted that it takes a bit of time for the water to escape the gap. With that...

Next step is to give all the adhesive time to fully cure and then see how well things stay in place when submerged.

    10g slate background

Thanks guys. I like the idea of using the eggcrate. For my project though I need something thicker. I found LPDE foam that is two inches thick. The plan is to create a few gaps in the two inch foam in order to house a heater, airstone, power filter intake and possibly a sponge filter. The gaps...

    10g slate background

I came across the following about a guy who made a background out of slate and Styrofoam: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=184535 Basically he siliconed Styrofoam to the back of the tank and glued the state to the foam. End results looked good. The example was on a 72g...

You think the 20g might be too big?

    Tank upgrade

Ooops. AC50 reference should be AC70. Just 1 filter involved.

    Tank upgrade

Right now I have a 5g tank with a small colony (5 adults, ~5 fry) of Heterandria formosa. I just set up a low-light planted 20gLong for them with an AC70 and a power head with sponge pre-filter and I'm trying to figure out the best way to move them over. The 5g has a Red Sea nano with an Aqua...

    AC 70 for 20g long

Thanks all. I'll likely scale down to an AC50.

    AC 70 for 20g long

Not keeping either of those fish.

    AC 70 for 20g long

The AC 70 is "rated" for tanks for 30-70 gallons. Would one of these units be too much for a 20g long aquarium?

    Dwarf, pygmy and panda cories

In my experience the smaller corydoras are a bit less hardy than the more common bronze corydora or peppered corydora. A 10g tank is not a lot of room for some of the larger corydoras (my opinion) but the smaller varieties would probably do alright as a group of 5 in a 10g tank. By smaller...

Live plants - should I try it?

Java Moss is another good low light plant. Just tie it to driftwood or rocks.

Chest of Drawers as a Stand

They will cut your wood but I don't think they guarantee accuracy. I always felt that they offered the wood cutting service mainly so that if you bought a large piece of wood you could get it in your vehicle and not necessarily to provide you with project grade cuts. I could be wrong, but it is...

    Light options for 38g

The T-5 fixture seems like it would address a lot of issues such as coverage and low wattage. From what I am reading it looks like the useful lifespan ofm the bulb is decent too. Now I just have to find somewhere in my area that sells T-5 bulbs and fixtures.

    Light options for 38g

My only misgiving about the 96w fixture is that it takes the tank beyond 2 watts per gallon. 2.5WPG looks like where it becomes necessary to start injecting CO2 and adding fertilizer. Is this a correct assessment?
