Just make sure his water is clean. I had one that was out of the tank all night and I didn't know it. Luckily they can get oxygen out of the air. You might want to add a product to help his slime coat but otherwise I wouldn't worry too much.

I did the DIY skimmer thing and I am in love. I like duckweed but once a month I have to scoop it out because the plants on the bottom of the tank don't get enough light. I also put sponges on my HOBs and my canisters because I don't want duckweed clogging them.

Also, mystery snails float all the time. I am not sure why but they seem to like it. Don't think they are dead automatically when they float. You will know by the smell, so give them a sniff test before you throw them away.

I agree with dropping the water line. The biggest problem you are looking at is that your goldies will eat the babies. The good thing is, you will have a hundred or more babies.
