    Question about ammonia/chloramines

What I do, is keep a small quarantine (QT) tank clean and dry, and keep a sponge filter for it in an operating tank. That way, bacteria live in the sponge, and when I need the QT, I can put the sponge filter in it. When I'm done with the QT, I break it down, clean everything, and put the sponge...

    Question about ammonia/chloramines

You will have to dose the whole tank with prime every 24 hours. It should keep the ammonia in a non-toxic form if you dose according to the label. You will still see the ammonia on tests.

Is neon gravel safe for fish?

I haven't had this problem myself, because I've always avoided coated substrates. I would suspect that water parameters like pH, TDS and temp would significantly affect the coating's longevity.

    Confusing test results

Another thing to consider: look at the numbers; 1 ppm ammo is pretty obvious, but if you had 1 ppm nitrAte, it may not be detectable - that scale starts at 5.

    Confusing test results

Is it a planted tank? Plants can consume all three, but they consume nitrAtes most easily. It is also possible that a certain strain of bacteria has developed that converts nitrAtes into nitrogen gas. It is unlikely, because it requires very specific conditions, but it is possible.

Is neon gravel safe for fish?

I would be more concerned that neon gravel might have an artificial coating on it, because a pleco may suck on the rocks.

    Sexing help? Angels

It's possible they are both female, and so the eggs weren't fertilized. They will pick out any dead or unfertilized eggs, so that they don't rot and cause problems for the others. If they are both female, none of the eggs would have been fertilized.

    Ghost Shrimp Predators?

Of course, it would help if I could make sense. What I meant to say is that only the tank that had ghost shrimp didn't have a pond snail outbreak. The only other thing different about that tank from the ones that had the snails go crazy was that it had angelfish. There were pond snails in that...

    Ghost Shrimp Predators?

I've heard of ghost shrimp eating baby pond snails. I've never directly seen it, but I believe it because many years ago I had a pond snail outbreak, and the only tank that wasn't affected us ghost shrimp.

    Cloudy Aquarium

I would try a series of small water changes, like Rbishop said. Since your parameters overall look really good, and it seems your tank may have been sitting for a rather long while, you don't want to do anything drastic. I would start with small, daily water changes, maybe a half gallon...

    API master test kit......

If I'm understanding you correctly, than yes, that could have caused your ammonia spike. It looks like your tank is doing a lot better now. :)

What kind of filter and media are you running?

    API master test kit......

I would definitely test your tank again, and test your water supply. Be very careful with making sure you use the correct reagents, drop counts, and timings for each test. It is possible that there are small amounts of nitrAte in your supply water, which would explain these results. Once you...

    API master test kit......

First thing I do when I get wonky results, is test again, very carefully. Have you gotten that result more than once? You show some nitrAte, which means you've gotten the bacteria that convert ammo into nitrIte, and the ones that convert nitrIte into nitrAte. If those results are correct, I...

    55L Tank

Just for clarification, do you mean 55 litre, or 55 gal long?

Mistakes made, but I thought I was finally doing everything right

Are you adding anything other than Prime to the water? Anything to alter the pH or hardness, for example? Does the water appear cloudy or bubbly, or in any way not crystal clear? Are there any smells? It does sound like it has something to do with the inbound water, just need to figure out what.

    Floating anubias

They will eventually attach to something on their own, right?

    Floating anubias

Does anyone just let their anubias float around the tank until they decide to attach to something? Will that work?

Been out of the hobby for years, but restarting.

Hi! Due to a move several years ago, I wound up selling all my tanks. Now that I'm more settled, and my oldest is starting to show interest in fish, and a friend wanted to give him a fish tank as a birthday present (they asked if it would be ok :)), I've decided to teach him the right way...
