I shop at a local store called "Ultimate Aquarium" in San Mateo, CA. I only buy my fish from there. I'm going to start ordering the supplies on Amazon because the store just charges too much for filter media and food.
I picked up some plants at the LFS and found this little guy among them:
Can anyone identify this fish? He's two inches long and looks like a goby or something. He seems to be doing alright in my tank. He just sits on the driftwood and constantly munches on the algae.
He ended up bloating up and dying. I'm guessing he was already sick when he jumped. Just did a 50% water change with a 25% to follow tomorrow.
My Paradise Fish adventure ended as soon as it began.
Well the good times may be over. I was about to go to bed tonight and when I was about to turn off the aquarium light, and I felt something moist by my heel. It was my paradise, laying there unmoving on my carpeted floor. I tried to pick it up and it flopped all over and ended up losing chunks...
I've had veil tails and a half-moon in the past and from my experience half-moons love to just sit on stuff. Their tails tend to drag them downwards any way so you'll see them sitting around most of the time.
Sounds gross to me. 10 gallon tanks are reasonably cheap and I would just get a new one. Rodents can be really filthy as well. I honestly wouldn't do it.
UPDATE: One Year Later
Here's my tank a year ago:
And here it is today:
I got some more driftwood, split my anubias, added some things, removed some things, put in a black background and got a new heater. What say ye? Upgrade? Downgrade? Any ideas?
I also want to add some...
The guy at the LFS said they only carried males. He's got an extension at the top of the back fin, but I think the one on the bottom might have been nipped off at the store.
I have him with six albino cories and he hasn't made any trouble so far, but I will keep an eye on him.
After my second Betta bit the dust (RIP Paul Stanley) a couple of months ago, I thought it was time to get back in the game and pick up my new centerpiece fish. I wanted something new, so I was thinking of maybe a dwarf gourami or a honey gourami, but then I saw this little dude in the shop...
