Hi everyone! First post here but been lurking a bit. A bit = half an hour :)

I have a 10 gallon tank that only had a feeder fish in it for about a month until the water cycled or what have you. This one's been fine for a few weeks now so I figured it was time to get a couple more fish. Ended up getting two new ones yesterday - a ryukin and black moor, each about 1.5" (the ryukin slightly bigger and wider).

Upon reading some of the posts here it seems like this might not be such a good idea with the amount of waste goldfish like these produce. I tested the water nitrate, nitrite, and ammonium and it all seemed okay but it's only been half a day. Not to mention that goldfish from what I've read can grow larger.

I'm gonna take some of it not all fish back during lunch today. Which would be my best option? ....

1) return the feeder and ryukin, keep the black moor and add a snail
2) #1 but add a few endlers
3) return them all, get a beta, snail, and few endlers

Or .... ?

A ten gal is really too small for goldfish ( plus goldfish are social) so taking them back would be a good idea if no upgrades are planned.
2 and 3 are fine.

no....3 is fine. in number 2 the OP plans on keeping the black moore and also adding endlers and a snail. No goldfish should be in a 10 gallon tank. I'm sure you just read it wrong...;)

My thoughts...

Want goldfish?
I would keep the feeder. If healthy he'll grow up like these big guys in my pic. Yep, all but the top right were feeder comets. Even so...10G for a comet is a bit small for long-term once he gets bigger. feed 'em and give'em room and they will grow like weeds.

Want Endler's? Give the feeder away and get Endler's. Goldfish and Bettas like Endlers for tasty live treats. See pic for my 20H endler tank with 20+ Endler's. they're very lively.

Want a Betta...give the feeder away and get a Betta.

No reason you can't add snails with any of these.

I do hate to see a healthy feeder go back to the store tho...have anyone with a large GF tank nearby to adopt it?

#3. a good stocklist and no worries about long-term upgrades.

mmmm... I wouldn't try a betta with endlers personally. remember that bettas are predators, and a endlers are just small enough to be tempting, especially the young ones. the males also are colorful and have long fins, so may incur a case of mistaken identity, with the betta thinking they are rival male bettas. getting a female would mitigate the latter complaint, and they do reproduce quite prolifically so a few fry here and there are of little consequence. overall it sounds good, but because theres a possiblity of mistaken identity i'd go with a female betta.

here's a picture of my black moor. this is a 90 gallon tank and his tank mates (the other fish) are all between 2 and 3 inches in length (not including the fins) he's also at the back of the tank and the little fish are at the front.. so he's about a foot behind them. keep in mind that black moors are on the smaller side of goldfish.. feeder fish get even larger.

i know its not the best quality photo, but i hope that gives you some idea as to the size (and therefore the tank requirements) for these fish.

good luck!

oh man. . . . your black moor is actually still black at that size. how lucky.

mine turned orange.

he's got a lot of orange undertone.. especially on the belly area, but you can't really tell in the pictures.

i was told that the way to avoid that was to keep them in colder temps.. but i've never been able to keep my tank cooler than 70 degrees, and i dont know how accurate the statement was anyway, so it didnt seem worth it to get a chiller.
