I got a 10 gallon tank for free that is cracked all the way down so I was just going to use it for a dry tank but while it was outside this happened....

2 days of rain!

So I tried filling it some more to see how much it would hold...

The black line is where it was to start with.

I did not want to fill it too much for obvious reasons!

Now usually I would just buy another 10g tank for $10 but as you can see it is a nice old stainless steel framed tank. Being that it is so small (won't undergo HUGE stress when filled) would anyone recommend trying to repair it? If not I will just use it for a dry tank no problem.

On a side note, I bought a bunch of stuff from this guy so he threw the 10g in for free. Here is what I got for $50.

A 29g stainless tank (leak free) w/ wrought iron stand (not pictured) & a fully functioning Eheim 2013 with brand new media & some free filter floss too. Now what to do with it!? :)

The great thing about those old tanks is that it's pretty easy to pull out the old glass and replace it. The overlapping seams are much easier to undo and redo than the tight seams on an all-glass tank. Try cutting the cracked piece free; if that proves intractable, you may be able to use a concentrated heat source to melt the adhesive enough to pull the glass out.

Hmm, I thought I was going to get a lot of "not worth it". This is much better!

Yes I have heard that you are a fan of these tanks, msjinkzd. :) I love them too and was quite surprised when I saw them among a STACK of tanks. And I am going to use it one way or another, that goes without question!

So removing the glass and replacing the entire piece is the way to go then? All the black silicone holding the frame to the glass is rather brittle too, should I replace that as well? You can kinda see it in the pictures but it is dirty too.

Alright so I will try to repair it just need to figure out exactly how now, thanks everyone. It does look like the inside was somewhat recently sealed but VERY poorly. I scraped a LOT of silicone off the glass, it was like 3 inches beyond all the seams.

mostlycichlids, you had a rottie picture for awhile right? It was a beautiful dog, I just never got a chance to tell you. :)
