i gotta 100 gallon that needs to be filled, im hoping with some sort of cichlid(s). but, what i also have in the tank is 2 inch tiger barbs, around 20 of them, so nothing big that could eat them.

any sugestions?

Your channel cat is going to outgrow that tank in no time, and I am surprised that some fish-eating hasn't already taken place in it, but I do agree with the beauty that such a tank must have!

I really agree with ChilDawg on that above statement. Anyways, as far as the tank goes, you could heavily stock it with rocks and then throw in 8-14 Africans, probably Malawian. You'll see some great colors and lots of interesting behaviors. And with all of those barbs, you already have your target fish lined up, so you might not have too many if any deaths during the initial fight for dominance.

dont mbuna cichlids require different water parameters...

and yes, everyone would probably disagree with stik, but lets stay on tha topic for my sake

I'm not sure if Tigers would adapt to mbuna conditions, so you have brought up a good point there. At the same time, I am not sure that they wouldn't get acidosis from living with Apistos. Your best bet would be a bottom-dweller from a river with moderate pH, since most of the lacustrine cichlids are more than a little aggressive.

BTW, I'm sorry about hijacking the thread and steering it off-topic, but I wanted to make sure that you didn't go for a tank like that, just in case that it interested you greatly!

ChilDawg: I don't think that you hijacked the thread, and agree with your thoughts about the 125g mentioned by stik. Although that tank may be interesting now (I am assuming that the fish are all juveniles), it is going to turn into a holocaust when some of the inhabitants start putting on some size. Many will get eaten, and then others will die from poor water quality as the survivors grow to their natural size. You can't even keep one pacu in a 125 (too small for them to turn around in), much less with all of those other sizeable fish (ghost knife, channel cat, bala sharks, and tinfoil barbs, to name just a few).

To go back to the original question, a 100 gallon tank with 20 2-inch tiger barbs should already be a spectacular sight. If I were going to add to that mix, I'd put in some loaches (not clowns, but only because their coloring is too similar), a smaller school of larger barbs, and perhaps a school of the larger hatchetfish. You could also go for a pair of the smaller geophagus or gymnogeophagus cichlids, as they are relatively mild-mannered and should not bother the other fish. Half of the fish I recommended are from SE Asia, and the rest from S. America...so much for the biotope tank, I guess.

You might be able to put a big pleco in there. I saw one with all kinds of bars on a site and they get along. I have alson seen differant colored tiger barbs just to give it more color unless you want to keep with there natural color. Got any pics of the school of barbs I was concidering some before but never really seen a big school of them except at the LFS where there 30 in a 20gal.
