100 gallons on balcony

Hi guys,

Its been a while since I've posted here in aquaria central, so you guys probably won't know me. I'm not sure if this question belongs here in the ponding section, but recently I got a 100 gallon tub to house a couple of my common goldfish outdoors and I was wondering if an upstairs balcony can hold a 100 gallon tub full? Thanks.

That is 1/2 a ton, so I wouldn't try it. If you know the floor and balcony is re-enforced maybe. If there are no pillers supporting the balcony from the ground absolutely not.

At least it wouldn't ruin the carpet :)

I'd bring in a contractor or engineer. People put hot tubs on decks and balconies. Those people will be able to accurately tell you if you can.

it is unlikely that the balcony is designed for that much static weight. as henningc suggested above, unless you have someone who really knows what they are doing certify it for the load, don't try it

i agree with what globe said, if a hot tub can go on a balcony why not a tank? just have a contractor come give it a look see, preferably someone you know so you know they aren't trying to sell you on unnecessary work

if the balcony is sticking out from the wall, as henningc says it's really unlikely that it was designed for that much static load. you have a better chance if it's a pocket balcony set into the wall, since it is supported on all 4 edges. i any case you're much better getting a reliable engineering opinion based on the as-built plans, if you can get them.

the thought of being in a hot tub on a balcony gives me the willies, altho perhaps that's just the native californian reaction to such things.

500 gallons water................824 pounds
Stock tank............................40 pounds
Decorations..........................35 pounds
you sitting there looking at it.150 pounds

......................................1049 pounds
over half a ton.

tell us more about the tub and the design of the balcony. If it has a large footprint it may be doable. If you figure a 200 pound person standing on 1 foot, and assume their foot is about 12" by 6" you are talking about 400 lb/square foot. so many variables.

How do you plan on putting 500 gallons of water in a 100 gallon tub???
