hey all,

I've got a 10g tank that is soon going to be empty because i'm giving those fish to my sister. Its been set-up for about 6 months now. I would love to put some swordtails in there. Is that a good idea? If so, how many

Thanx

if you want endless babies have about 3 males and 3 females. It's a good idea, they are nice fish and easy to look after!

swordtails...

In my opinion, swordtails ned larger room (20g+) since they do have a large max size (about 6", not counting their 'sword') If you want kool livebearers, try platies (a.k.a. swordless swordtails) They are smaller. You could easily keep 4-6 in there, but be aware that there ARE going to be 35464757657857875867 fry.... and they will all get eaten if not put away from the adults.

maybe mollies?

swords grow up to five inches, I have two (just found her former mate on the bottom, possible shock as I had only had him a week now) in my 20 gal, and later his fall when i move my up and coming leviathans to a ninty my swords are gonna go into a thirty, were they will live out there days ( hopefull alot of them). Mollies are similer, friendly than swordtails, smaller and pretty to look at, as well as entertaining. In a ten gal, however, they wont really have much room as these three inchers like to school in groups of at least three....i started out with four swords but the number has fell to two now. I had just bought a replacement pair but the mate passed away last night. poor lil guy. but now my two females are in love with the singl "stud". Good luck, if i were you i would get six tetras or fancy guppies and a dwarf frog for the ten gal.

ditto. swordtails get way too big for a 10g. Platies kind of resemble swords, but 1 male and 3/4 females would do great in a 10g.

I would suggest platies as well. You don't really have to worry about babies that much unless you really want to. IME most of the fry get eaten, if not all. Otherwsie just get males.

yeah, i'm gonna have to get a bigger tank one day. i've had mollys and patties before. i had tons of babies. at first it was kewl, but then i decided it was survival of the fittest. seems alot of those lil buggers were fit. none one day, 20 the next would pop up from the gravel. hmm.. maybe i should start a fish farm in my house.. a way to make fish keeping profitable.. lol. but we only have one LFS in this city if you don't include walmart. which, those fish live just long enough for the warrenty to end. after three days, they die. i think walmart does that on purpose.. anyway, thanx for the advice
