10g stocking and cycling questions...

Ok, I hate to post so much on my own thread, but I just found some anecdotal evidence that tiger barbs in a 10g would be a bad idea...

While searching though, I found Another Interesting Sounding Template :

Some cherry barbs, 4 or 5 maybe
A Ram
2 or 3 corys

Whould that work? Seems like a kinda heavy load to me, but what do I know? :D

I also read that cherry barbs don't school as much, so I guess if I where going to try and cut the bio-load I could always lower the cherrys.

Any suggestions?

The barbs and cories would work.

The apon plants are said to grow really well. There's a thread in the fw plant forum about them near the top right now. Apparently they grow really fast, but from what I understand they also have a dormant period, during which they wilt.

If you're interested in plants, definitely spend some time reading the stickies in the plant forum and definitely ask any questions that pop up. There are lots of very helpful people there.

You don't need a biowheel, the HOB that came with the kit is fine. Scratch the carbon and double up on foam. What kind of filter did you get, btw?

I think that cherry barbs (5) and maybe 4 cories would be a fine 10 gallon tank. But I wouldn't add anything else. The Ram's can get very territorial and big IMO for a 10 gallon. The cherry barbs are pretty and quite aggressive.

The Hagens I use stick on the side. I heard undergravel heaters were good for plants but if anything went wrong with them you'd have to tear up the whole setup to get at the heater.

From what I've read, the undergravel heaters were more for creating a circulation cell in the substrate, not for heating the entire tank. Some believe that heating the bottom of the substrate improves plant growth, others question this and quote their experience growing plants w/o it.

Substrate heating tends to cost mucho $$ as well.
