I'm thinking that either way it's probably gonna be mostly a predator setup. My LFS doesn't have much of those oddball guys that I've seen. Only very rarley do they have something unique like that. It'll still be a little while before I can get a stand and filter(s) for it. Until then I get to dream/research/plan on what I want.

One can obtain locally rare fish at fair prices online through reliable exporters and wholesale intermediaries.

I feel rather wary about ordering fish now that it get's close to freezing at night here. Both me and my spouse work full time and noone is ever home to recieve orders.

What are the dimensions of the tank? An awesome predator for the home aquarium is the Hoplias malabaricus (Wolf Fish).

I'm a bit partial to them myself.

If you're having trouble finding a naturally occuring combination of fishes that appeal to you, then go with the "Florida Canal" biotope

Hahahah, I'm a big fan of that uh...."biotope" lol. "Lets see....africa, asia, north ameria, south america, hmm.......can somebody suggest an antarctic species for my tank?" j/k (for the most part)


Kittyhazelton, I suggest a pred tank if you're looking for personality....maybe an oscar and possibly try your hand at a blue dempsey if you have a smaller tank to raise it in first...here's a link: Adult Blue Jack Dempseys..

Then have a couple of bichirs on the bottom, and maybe another large peaceful fish or two (I.E. severums, tinfoil barbs, silver prochilodous, etc...) and that would be an unnatural, but nice setup. Good filtration and consistant weekly maint. though.


EDIT: The blue dempseys in that link are not mine, and neither are the pics.....however I do have two of those beauties growing out in one of my tanks. :dance:

Don't forget that depending on the pred' or other fish you may wish to alter your filter selection. Define the tank before getting the equipment.

Personally I like oddballs. As a prominent show tank, keep in mind not everyone "gets it". Some visitors, perhaps your spouse will think you wasted a lot of space. Also you don't want an arowana splashing a gallon of water in your living room. Tanks of large cichlids often reflect function more than form (ie the blue dempsey link) thus maybe not a center piece.

I like the smaller oddballs suggested previously; knife fish (not clown), butterfly fish, pictus cat for flash, perhaps a few angels (my bias), and a gourami for color. In NJ we're fortunate to have a multitude of stores, but with patience, these fish should show up at most stores (aside from walmart)or could be ordered for you. Do your research first and know the genus-species names of the fish you want, especially if you order them through your lfs. Many "tank busters" are grouped in the oddball genre.
