Folks,

Now that I am beyond my Cardinal Tetra issue, I wanted to share my up to date environment, along with a question:

125 gallon
Fluval 304
Fluval 404
(2) 300 watt heaters
large 3'wide x 18'' high driftwood
(2) large 19" amazon sword plants
Java Moss
(5) 18" Anacharis (sp) plants
(all live plants)
Large gravel bottom

Current fish population:

(8) Cardinal Tetras
(2) Kuhli Loaches
(2) Clown Loaches
(1) Small Pleco
(3) Otto's
(15) quarter sized tank raised Angels (silvers) - just added 1 day ago

Current Water Conditions:

Amonia - 0ppm
Nitrates - 7.5ppm
Nitrites - 0ppm
PH 7.2

Question -- Will the Nitrates convert to Nitrites on their own, or water change, or ??

Water changes have been weekly at 20-30%. Last water change was Saturday, so 4 days ago. Next one tomorrow or Friday.

Thoughts?

Thanks for all the help.

Ted

well nitrates ar ethe byproduct of the bacteria that eat nitrite.
the best way to get rid of the nitrate is good old fashoned water changes

i think you might be overstocked, for angels like thier space when they are in groups.
be prepared for a cycle since you addaed 15 fish at once

yup, nitrate is the end-product of nitrification in the aquarium.
Ammonia (NH3) -> Nitrite (NO2) -> Nitrate (NO3)
as jm said, the only way to remove nitrates is through water changes.

I thought there were to many angels. I do have another tank (55 bow) that I will transfer some into once things are stable with them.

I woke up to one lost angel. The others are not acting as they were the first two days. the are huddled in two groups at the bottom. several of them are in a cowling like position (fins folded in). Not very active. Also one every so often shakes his head a couple times rapidly. Not sure what the proble is with my water as it was described last night.

SO.... I did a 40% water change prior to heading into work.

Any thoughts? (sorry for so many questions)

Thanks,
Ted

Are there any fish that are acting dominant in the tank? When you get home take your water parameters. You dont have many plants in the tank. Do you have anything else in there or is it all open space?

I acutally missed some plants. In addition to the ones described I have 4 medium sized grass plants and 2 medium 8'' red and green plants (no clue what they are). So, planted up pretty good.

I will again take my water parameters tonight. The only thing I don't have a kit for is hardness. Is that a concern? If so, which hardness kit is good? I have seen two different measurements?

Thanks,

Ted

Parameters look fine. I took, then took a sample over to LFS. No issues. PH is now 7.0 due to buffer added this morning.

They said it could be parasite. Recommended adding garlic to their food????

you could do some research. there are sites that will describe many diseases and the associated treatments. Sounds like stress of some sort, other than behavior do they look any different?

As far as tests go i use the freshwater master test kit sold in most stores and then got the kH test made by the same company--the liquid ones. What kind of buffer are you adding to the tank? the pH doesnt need to be 7.0. The less you add to the tank the better.

Without the buffer, the ph is 7.2.

Angels look no different other than behaviour.
