This is my new 12g Eclipse. It's been around a little more than a month. This is the final look, so let me know what you think. The more I read about Neon Tetras, the more I felt that I wanted them, and wanted to give them the best opportunity to live comfortably. (I apologize for any blurriness, still getting used to these real high resolution cameras. O.o)

So I refit the tank in dark colors, added more plants (9 of them, they are dried/dyed Aqua Ferns, very soft), and added some floating plastic plants to dim the lights. I know they like real plants, and that may be in the future. I also have a clay pot and a rainbow rock, piece of driftwood from petco.com and a bubbler.

Please let me know whether you think I can improve on a Neon Tetra-lagoon. :D I plan to order all of my fish from liveaquaria.com - hopefully the odds of healthy little guys will be better.

The tank is situated in an upstairs guest bathroom (no windows.) It's conveniently located near a (very quiet) toilet. This week I plan to get in there and finish my tidal pool paint job, stick some paste fish on the wall, etc. (The fumes should be gone before the cycling finishes.) Everyone who knows me knows this bathroom really belongs to the fish. No sprays ever, no perfumes, no hairspray, deoderizors etc.

It sits on a cast iron tank stand from Petsmart. (I know it looks tiny, but I'm pretty pleased with the size.) You can see it in relation to the toilet. In this photo, ALL lights are on, no flash. (Do you think it's too bright still?)

More to come...

Looks neat! Where did you get those fake floating plants from? I need to get some of those for my killie tank. :)

Thanks!

I picked it up at Petsmart.

It's actually meant to line the bottom of the tank, but it was the closest thing I could find to what I was looking for. I just cut 3 little sections of the grid and floated them upside down. (Although it appears Petsmart.com does sell spefically manufactured floating plants, my store just didn't carry any so I had to improvise.)

Nice Tank Julie

The only thing I'm wondering about are those red plants you have in there. They look nice, but I'm thinking they may take away from the neons...colorwise...

If you really want the neons to stand out, you may want to remove the red...though...I'd give it a try with the fish in there, see what you think. Can always remove the plants later if they dont work.

Just a thought... ;)

Other than that...nice tank ! I especially like the floaters you have in there..I think the neons will too ! :D

I agree with you... darn Petco.com stopped giving me the option of choosing green. They all arrived red. They aren't exactly cheap - they're one of the priciest things in there at $6-9 each. *lol* It was like the green ones disappeared off of the map. If I see them appear, I'll probably grab some more. (It probably can't hurt. :D)

On the other hand, I noted someone else said that blue substrate brought out alot of fish colors, including BLUE fish. Wonder whether that will work with red plants/red coloring.

I like the look of the floaters as well, but I'm wondering how the future Betta will feel about it. (The plants only cover the front though, where the light is, and not the back.) I've also got about 3" square from the feeding flap that's not covered in plants. I'm wondering if I'll either have to A) pull them out during feeding and put them back later. (Hopefully won't scare the fish.)

or B) buy something like this feeding ring, to try and keep the food from floating in the current in the plants. http://www.petco.com/Shop/Product.aspx?R=8730&Nav=1&N=0&Ntt=ring&sku=887498&familyID=10900&

And I think it's safe to say I'll have to remove/maneveur around them during gravel vacc'ing.

Thank you for your feed back. :)

if you're thinking of having a betta and neons..be careful... small neons often become snacks for large bettas. Not a fun experience! But otherwise the tank looks pretty good..keep us updated!

You're right about that - It surprises me that a betta could catch a neon, but I suppose everybody has to sleep! O.o This has been on the back of my mind, because betta personalities vary. I had one years ago who peacefully coexisted with danios and several gouramis. (Though the tank was double the size of this one.)

Although I was hoping to grab the best specimens from liveaquaria, I think you might be right. I think I'll need to choose this guy carefully. The one thing I actually like about my LFS is that they do NOT do Bettas in cups. Each of their bettas swim in the tanks with everyone else. They make good use of their space too! (It breaks my heart to see them laying in a cup.) I think the chance of disease is greater if I buy him from the store, but at least I can pick one who's either a)already swimming and used to the neons or b)already in a tank with similar snack-sized fish. None of the ones I've observed even seemed to acknowledge the other guy.

The other thing I've heard is that if you put fish in the tank around the same time (as opposed to adding a few later), the fish are all on the same page as far as territory goes. I was hoping this would work in my favor.

I still feel like using fish from a fish store is risky... even though I rarely see any dead guys laying around. Maybe I'll have to look up some QT information after all. :/

Thank you for your feedback!

oh and as for the amanos... they seem to be nothing but protein snacks too! After losing around a dozen in my five gallon, I finally figured out they were becoming betta lunch after catching him in the act! They just suck them down like there's no tomorrow!

Sheesh. Maybe this Betta needs a time out from the buffet! *just joking*

If he's not compatible with the smaller ones, I do plan to buy another 3-5g setup. But hopefully I'll be able to buy one who's... nicer. :P
