13 dolphins killed by driftnet

Sigh...what a shame people can't just follow the rules. :(

Almost on Topic...

Since inshore netting - commercial fishing, has been banned years ago, there's been a noticeable increase in fish populations in Florida.

I was on an Atlantic side Fl beach about 11 years ago and there was all this garbage on the beach. I was told that it was from NYC dumping its garbage in the ocean. Has that cleared up? I bet that that had a noticable effect of fish stocks.

It cleared awhile back. Not sure of fish stock damage, but I don't think there was enough to cause a huge problem.

Last years hurricanes pushed around and out lots of sand. So far no real environment problems except downed trees that were a little weak to start with.

I don't want to go through a hurricane again, ever.

Liveing in Florida really hurts your chances on that one.

Last year was the first (for me..). Let's see, that makes about 4 decades. But, you're right, this isn't Kansas and I wouldn't want those massive tornadoes either!

Trust me-compared to the size of a hurricane, tornadoes are no trouble at all!
The largest tornado I recall hearing about (may be larger ones-don't know) was about a half mile wide. How does that compare to the eye of a hurricane?
Most tornadoes just leave a narrow (in comparison, that is) line of destruction in their path. Not that the destruction isn't terrible-they can wipe out almost anything short of a concrete bunker, but a quarter mile to either side, there is relatively no damage.
Of course, we do still have thunderstorms, with hail, straight line winds, and the like; we also have ice storms in the winter-we had one that pretty much missed us this past winter, but took the tops out of all the trees over in and near Wichita; knocked out power for up to 3 weeks in some areas.

I'll take another hurricane over a strong tornado anytime!

"February 22-23, 1998
During the first killer tornadoes of the year, three supercells dropped killer tornadoes in Florida around midnight on February 22-23, striking while people slept. The final total seems to be forty-two deaths and about 260 injured. President Clinton toured the damage and declared 14 counties eligible for Federal disaster relief. This was Florida's deadliest outbreak to date.
"

I saw the destruction the next day. A few convenience stores were nothing but concrete slabs. People died in the stores, as well as at home sleeping. 22 of the dead were within 5 miles of where I live.
