Kids swimming in a river is the most natural thing you will find them doing. It's a shame he drowned but I see nothing wrong with it. We let our kids swim in the rivers here all the time and yes, there is boat traffic on them. The kids are pretty observant in watching for them.

is it worth the risk of having to bury you child??

there are many pools with lifeguards,.. after its your child,??????? how would you feel after the funeral???

would you have rethough it?
at least in a pool most times you can see where they are and it wont have a current to take the out where you can't get to them,...or find them,..

i can't bare to think of it,..

We have 1 pool and that is at the "Y". $300 to swim once or twice is too expensive.

If it were my child I would be just as devastated as I imagine his parents are. Would I second guess myself if it were my child? No.

Every year we have drownings. Unfortunate and possibly preventable in most cases and it isn't just kids that drown. We have had scuba divers and fishermen drown as well. It is and always will be one of the risks in living near a river or lake. there are risks anywhere.

It is a tragic accident no doubt.
I don't want to speak for any other parents but I know for me my greatest fear is to out live my child, with that being said kids are going to be kids and they need to be.
A 6 year old playing little league was killed when his heart stopped when he got hit in the chest by a ball...do we not let our kids play baseball? Hind sight is always 20/20...the best thing anyone can do now is to have a good thought for the family and give your kids an extra big huge and kiss.

where i live is 2 mile from the ohio river and many ponds and large streams and i have never been in water or pool and i'm alive and healthy,.. i had kiddy pools as a child,.. as did my kids,.. but In my own opinion it is my duty as a parent to make sure your child stays alive till adult,.. yes i worry all thetime about my son getting hit in the chest and having his heart stop,.. me and my son seem to have a strange beat or lack of in our hearts we have both been tested a few times and nothing can be found,
but it kills me to here my son as a 3yo double over in pain holding his chest,. and me listning to the heart and it sound the same as mine did when i have these episodes,..

he is now 10 and i fear that something will happen to him,.. but i don't go out of my way to be overly protective i just use my head,..
but to each his own, i guess, but i'm not putting my kid in unessary harms way for a little fun,.. there are other ways to have fun without that much chance of death,

i don't gamble much with my kids,.. it just bothers me to hear those unessary things,.

Better chance of dying in a car wreck then from swimming in a river.

I grew up on the beach. Better chance of being pulled out into the ocean then drowning on a river.

Around here though the lake is the place to swim. The Y is way to expensive and the time I did set up an inflatable pool it hardly got used and cost to much to maintain.

Its a shame the kid drown. But guess what, kids drown in public pools and backyard pools also. As much as we'd like to think we can always protect our kids its not really in our hands.

I dont want to put down any way of parenting but i am glad my parents let me swim. I had a pool that i would swim in all the time, and i live on the ocean and would swim in the ocean a lot as well. I love everything about the water, i fish, swim, boat snorkel or anything i can on the water every chance i get. I am even thinking about going to get my SCUBA certification.

i understand that you are talking about kids drowning in rivers but a person can still drown in a swimming pool WITH life gards around....

i still think it is VERRY sad what this family has go to through...
