I am currently fishless cycling my 18 Gallon Freshwater tank according to guidelines outlined in these forums.

I am thinking about what I should stock with? Would Neon Tetras work? or Platies?

I was also thinking about getting cories as bottomfeeders? And some otos to take care of the algae.

What's a good combo of these fish for a tank my size? Thanks!

either or would work, it's just a matter of how many. platties get bigger about 3-4 inches and not too many would fit in there, but some neon tetra and some corydora in the bottom of that tank would look awsome, also some plants or fake plants would work depending how much effort you want to put in your tank.
as for numbers ,I would say 3-4 platties 8 neon tetra and 2 Corydora or oto. I may be wrong however

Thanks for your reply. That what I was thinking. I spotted some really nice Panda Cories at a LFS.

I would go with bigger tetras like rummynose or black skirts(if you're set on tetras) or some harlequins rasboras for a school, then you could get a bigger centerpiece fish like a dwarf gourami. You could go with 6-8 rasboras, a dwarf gourami, 4 panda cories and a dwarf(smaller) pleco.

Hi,

For your 18 gallon tank you could get 12 Neons Tetras (they would look great in a school that size), and six Cories (they need to be kept in groups). I think it would look better just having two species and more of them, then having three species and less of them.

HAHAH, you just described my 18 gal... I have few less tetras mind you, and no otto but it has worked out nice for the plants and livebearers

Another question...

would Blue Rams work in an 18 gallon? Thanks.
