So I went out to get 4 more d. kyathit to go with the four I already had, which turned out to be a great decision - the fish are visibly happier, making a constant conga line around the tank, and even getting my blue tetras to join in.

Funny thing is though, that the 4 new ones are quite different looking to the four originals:

The first 4 are the darker orange / brown ones with wavy stripes, while the newer ones are paler, with more of a speckled pattern.

Is this much variation normal? Do I have two different species? I'll be interested in seeing what the colours look like after both batches are habituated to my water / lighting / food.

In any case, I rather like the way they compliment each other.

Gorgeous kyathit! I've only ever kept the striped version with the red finnage, but there does appear to be both a striped and a spotted version. Who knows if they'll end up being the same species in the long run though. Nice fredcochuis as well btw. Love to see a full tank shot!

Thanks all, these pics really aren't doing them justice, the shimmer along their sides is almost incandescent under strong light - I took a bunch more photos trying to get one that captured it.

I haven't kept common danios before, these guys are certainly very active, always on the move. However they don't move in that darting frenetic way like my fredcochui. I live in paris so i've got a huge choice of fish stores, including some which always have healthy and less than common stuff.

@Inka, my tanks are in a pretty sorry state at the moment due to some holiday season neglect - in this photo the danio tank is in the center, puffers to the right and temp tank to the left

I really need to upgrade the size of the main tank, the blue tetras need more space to swim in (note the one with the puffy nose above? they keep running out of room to chase). I'll be moving soon though, so i'm putting it off for the moment...

Wow, those are absolutely stunning!
