2 electic yellow questions

Just started a Cichlid tank 2 weeks ago. The first electic yellow took to the tank great. But has since lost some color and turned to a dull brown with darker stripes going up and down.

About 3 days after we got him we got another electric yellow. It has maintained its colors but will not eat due to the agressive nature of the first yellow. Many places to hide but the first yellow has taken over the entire bottom of the aquarium. Any help with any of this?
 
african cichlids should be maintained in groups of 4-6. one male and 4-5 females. do this and your fish will behave "normally".
 
Ok, i have redesigned the tank to allow for the Cichlids to redefine their territories. Any idea about the one losing its bright yellow color?
 
If I want a breeding colony, should I stick with Electric Yellows, or mix it up some? Is it not difficult to distinguish the males from the females at early ages?
 
Electric Yellow question.

This one has lost its brilliant yellow look. Any idea why?

african cichlids should be maintained in groups of 4-6. one male and 4-5 females. do this and your fish will behave "normally". including breeding. you should NEVER hybridize cichids by "mixing it up some".
 
i know they should be kept in groups but i have had an electric yellow cichlid for 5 months now. It took about 3 weeks for him to get used to the tank to come out from hiding. His color came and went but now his color is brighter than ever. I would say just give it a little time. Mine also didnt eat right away i would put food in and leave when i came back it was gone just took a while for it to eat in front of me. Hope this helps
