As long as its in good working condition, that shouldnt hurt right? For now until I can get a smaller one?? I just thought the bowl temps were starting to get chilly at night.

All it will do is work more efficiently, in that it will not have to be on as long to keep the water at the proper temp. It will also take up a little more space than a smaller heater.

Thanks - my thoughts exactly, i just wanted to be sure that I wouldn't be doing him harm with such a big heater. I turned it on really low low to start with so the temp change didnt happen to quick. It came on for like 15 seconds then shut off.

That can happen with any heater though. Everyone should be diligent in checking their tank temps at least daily if not more often to make sure taht heaters are working properly.

I would be most concerned with that larger heater if it were too long. In that case it may stick out of the water too far. Make sure that the minimum water mark stays underwater as long as the heater is turned on.

The heater doesnt touch the bottom, sides and is completley submerged. Its a large large fishy bowl (bought it because I had never seen one that big before) Thought it would make the perfect betta home after one of my two bettas in my 10 gal tank started jumping the divider. :D

Shawna, the safest thing to get for a container like this is a reptile heating pad.
Just place the bowl on top and you should be fine. :)

Now THAT is an idea i never thought of!! I'll look into that. It doesnt hurt them if they get wet??

Beware - I put one of those flat submersible heaters

in my betta's 2G tank under the gravel - and it's dangerous! It doesn't shut itself off but heats continuously, so on day 2 (day before yesterday) I found the temp to be 88 degrees :mad2: ! Luckily, the poor fish seems to have survived unscathed. Now I'm looking for a replacement heater and in the meantime I keep unplugging and re-plugging the aforementioned piece of junk to keep the temp somewhat stable around 78.
