2 questions ...

I have recently added a rock with some mushrooms on it into my tank and a med. sized colt coral. Until today I've had these under a 24 in 10,000k strip (20w bulb) in a 40 long tank. When the mushrooms were first added (about 2 weeks ago) there were about a dozen large ones with a couple little ones on the rock ... now there seem to be noticable less ... like 7-8 large and a few small ones. The mushroom rock is located in the middle of my tank a little over half way toward the top (I'd say about 6 inches, maybe less, from the surface) and has a low current running by it. Is there something wrong with where I have it located that would cause the mushrooms to go downhill? Any suggestions?

Next, the colt coral ... I added this last week. It seems to be doing very well and I was just wondering about feeding? Should I do anything in particular for feeding or just let it pick up pieces of food (frozen brine shrimp, pieces of frozen formula, frozen mysis)?

Now, I just today fixed up the lighting a bit more. The LFS suggested going from the 20w 24inch 10,000k bulb to a 30w 36inch 10,000k bulb, so I did that today (my birthday present from hubby, along with a new big beautiful CORAL BANDED Shrimp that I slipped in there as well) :D Does the lightning sound right now? I am planning to add a few more soft corals in the future and want to get the right kind for my lighting.

That's still really low level lighting. The wattage sounds like these are NO lights, and they won't support most corals. Try moving the mushrooms higher in the tank--and getting up to at least 3 watts per gallon will help out. As is, you're barely going to be able to support them. Sorry.

For feeding--the colts will grab onto little particles in the water column. Make sure the foods are not in big chunks, and target feed it each time. You'll be able to see the polyps close on foods.

The CBS can be very aggressive to other crustaceans--you'll need to be very careful with any additions. I probably wouldn't risk anything other than hermits and snails.

was looking at the box from the bulb ...

and it is a Corallife tube. It says that it is suppose to be good for corals (I'm sure not all) and promot health and growth in them in tanks 30 - 70 gallons (I'm guessing due to size and wattage).

I was reading some of the other posts on lighting ... what are power compacts? Would one of these be better? Where should I look for these if this is what I should have? My LFS most likely doesn't carry them since when I bought this new strip and bulb setup I asked what would be best for my tank and explained what I had and this is what was suggested, aside from completely redoing my lights entirely and spending hundreds of dollars. (out of the question)

Sorry to sound so stupid with all the questions.
