2 very different questions, please help!

first of my two questions: i have a 20 gallon tank that i've had for a few weeks(maybe a month?) now. my dad maybe a week ago comented on its cloudyness. i know this could be the tank cycling but i used some bacteria starter recommended by the guy at the aquarium shop and he claimed it would go through its cycle in 24-48 hours. i really didnt notice a change in its cloudyness after i used the starter. my question is could this just be the tank cycling or is my water way to dirty? my filtering system is pretty good
my second question is that im looking at making a small 10 gallon aquarium and i would like to know if there are any chilids i could put in it that would get along with gold gourami i would like to put in the tank as well in addition to a couple of neons.
 
What was the name of the bacteria starter? If it wasn't bio-spira, then the LFS guy lied to you.

Most likely your cloudy water is from a bacterial bloom and will clear itself up soon.

As for the 10 gallon..a gold gourami will get to 6 inches...that with a couple of neons will be all a 10 gallon can handle. Some would even say the gold gourami will get too big for the 10 gallon....it is pushing it...
 
Thanks. it was the biospira stuff so hopefully you're right. also from your advice i wont put a gold gourami in. i might use the ten gallon as a livebearer tank instead.what livebearers would make a good combination? i would still like to know what kind of cichlid would work in a ten gallon.
 
If I were going to do a 10 gallon cichlid, I would make sure I had tons of rocks and caves first of all. Then, I would put in four Masked Julies (Julidochromis transcriptus). These are cool little fish...breed easily also from what I understand.

Other small cichlids from Lake Tanganyika would work well also...
 
As per the couple of neons mentioned earlier, make sure to always have at least 5 of any given tetra as they are schooling fish and they tend to feel stressed with less of their kind.

For live bearers in that tank I would suggest the good old Platy. Many colour variations, fun to watch, fair size (fat little guys) and do well in smaller tanks. Not to mention really hardy and cheap!! Just put lots of plants in the tank and the babies will survive easily.
 
I have a keyhole, and for $10 it's a nice cichlid because it's smallish and not very aggressive (hell, my barb was bullying it around :D ).
 
thanks everyone. i've been thinking of a key whole cichild but i can find any around here. i'll defintely look into the masked julies and the tanganyikian shelldwellers
