I'm familiar with aquariums, etc. I have a red ear slider at my dads house. However, my mom just got me a 20 gallon starter kit today. I'm going to add plants and guppies in there. The light is Aqua-Glo and it's only 15 watt. I believe this is not enough. Or is it? Any thoughts. If it's not enough, I'm thinking of buying a seperate bulb/lamp and have it outside of the tank, shining directly into it. Would that work? Thanks.

I don't believe that's enough light. only 0.75 wpg. I'd get a lighting retrofit kit form www.ahsupply.com or www.petsupplyliquidator.com if you have a light, it shoudl shine form directly above. Note though... guppies+plants=lots of guppies :P

have fun!

The starter kit includes this "aquarium guide". I know most of them, but I still insisted to read it while I was in the car. It said that the lights should be 2 watts per gallon. I have a 20 gallon. The light bulb that came with it is 15 watts, lol. I guess I should get a 50 watt bulb? Is that overkill? I think it would work great.

yeah 2wpg is a good number. I have 2 55 watt bulbs over my 55 gallon. if you're feeling adventurous, get a prewired ballast for one 55 watt PC bulb from www.petsupplyliquidator.com and get the 6500k bulb with it. Then mount this into the hood that came with your tank. That's what I did, except with two. If you're in to tearing stuff apart and rebuilding it anyway. You can use zip-ties to hold the bulb up. nobody is gonna see it ;)

i'm not really into ordering stuff online right now, nor i can spend $40+ on a lamp. any particular suggestion of what i can buy from a local pet store?
