Im planning on buying a 30 gallon high aquarium and was wondering if my 20 gallon high hood would fit the 30 gallon high aquarium

No. 20 gallon high is 24 long. 30 long is 36". I haven't heard of a 30high so I could be wrong on that. 30 and 30 breeder are the only 2 I know of. If you're getting a used tank it could be a 29 and that is 30".

I used my 20 gallon hood on my 30 gallon tank, don't see why it wouldn't work for you

Now I know what a 30H looks like and saw the dimensions, then yes it is likely your 20H hood will fit. From that link it appears the 20H and 30H have the same footprint. Thanks for the post. I learned a new tank size I have a chart with 90% of the common sizes with empty and full weights. I can add that one in.

I have both a 20 high and a 29 high. Yes the hood is interchangeable between both.

30X high no problems, but kind of a hard size tank to stock and maintain, its pretty much a square, with low aeration surface area. I would imagine a 12" wide top would work on any 12" wide tank as long as it's built strong enough to not have support on two sides(or you could do something temporary) until you can spring for a 30 or 36" hood. You could always just buy a wider hood with a glass window and use the 24" light unit for a while as well. You could also buy a more standard size 30G hood/tank kit from a box store and clean up and sell the 20. I think you might regret getting the oddball 30X-high.
