I've been researching for awhile and know I want cichlids, but have yet to be convinced of what I should put in my 240 gallon, arrives in 1 week! I've been out of the hobby for awhile and have had my 55 setup going with convicts for 6 months or so. Just hoping to gain some insight into something I may not have considered, anything is welcome, I’m new just looking for some fellow fish fan influence. I’ve looked into Fronts , Blue Rams (like 15 in there?), and have kept rams, red empress, firemouths, texas, and oscars. Sorry if I've used lame/newb terminology.

Having been out for awhile I'm also not completely sure if I've got everything worked out correctly. I've ordered a Fluval fx5 canister, rated @ 925gph and have an emperor hang on. I've looked into other threads that say wet/dry would work great, is this needed in addition, I’ve got an extra 29 gallon and 2 power heads.

Also how long should I plan to cycle the tank?

Yikes that’s a bunch! Cheers

Get a wet dry sump everything else is just a waste for a tank of that size. I would go with a semi aggressive american cichlid tank sevs rainbow cic's gold cic's firemouths that type of stuff thats what I have in mine

i agree with the wet/dry sump for larger tanks. i have one on my 150g and a complete water changing system. This keeps freshwter in the tank at all times. Hsve you looked into Jagur cichlids. Those are amazing guys and gals. I have a pair that just started spawning in 90g , they will be moved into the 150g at the frist of the year.

i agree, a 240 with fish that dont get HUGE although sevs get pretty big..

i say firemouths, cons, geos, salvinis maybe a few bolivian rams, along with a few pictus cats for the bottom

you could also do a semi agressive amazon tank with angels/discus blue rams, bolivian rams and then add a nice school of neons or cardinals, maybe some hatchest to hang out at the top, and then a bunch of cory cats for the bottom..

Well I've already ordered my canister and hob dude...
Although, I really am interested in a complete water changing system and wet/dry combo, does this require drilling? I will have to look into it more.

As for the fish, still up in the air. What are geos?

I'm leaning toward drawf cichlids.
Are amazing shell dwellers really hard to find? and expensive? I've read contradictive things about how truely active and fun to watch they are, truth? recommendations?

I really do like the semi aggressive amazon tank idea.

Still doing my homework and open to suggestions. Looking for cichlids, with company perhaps, on the smaller scale.

If it were my tank I would set up the tank with lots of driftwood , discus, rams, and some loricariidae(plecos) there are some very beautiful plecos , queen arabesque, bn's are interesting as are clowns (tho they hide alot you may want moonlights) king tiger plecs also very cool looking pleco as are the gold nuggets plec's. the bn's are great for algae..the others require wood or mixed diets..most of these remain small.

also the cardinals, you could go with angels tho discus folks(some ) say bad mix..my discus are doing pretty good with the angels but they were raised with the angels.
all these fish are SA fish..and you could get a nice shoal of discus in that tank if you haven't seen discus..you need to find a discus breeder..they are impressive fish and get large. mine are only 8 months old I have one that is a 6" dish size and it's still growing.

If you want shell dwellers put them in a smaller tank. Geos are Geophagus they are very beautiful and peacfull except for the brasillensis

I agree with the Fronts!! 4 or 5 Fronts would be awesome!!!!
