I am thinking about using my 24g Nano for a cichlid. Are there any out there that would be suitable for this small of a tank? Also, wanted it to have live plants. Will cichlids tear up everything?

What's the floor space in that tank? That would help knowing what might do well in there. You have quite a few likely options, though...such as:

Pair of blue/gold/german rams and some dithers.
Pair of bolivian rams and some dithers.
Pair of Apistogramma borelli and some dithers.
L. curviceps or dorsigera pair and some dithers.

I'm sure there are a lot more dwarf cichlid options, but the above are not diggers and would love (actually, they do much better in) a planted tank.

Also, Lake Tanganyikan shellies would do well in your tank (N. multifasciatus, N. brevis, etc.). However, the higher pH limits plant option a bit (java fern, java moss and vals do well though).
