I have searched and searched through threads for hours and all I have really been able to make my mind up on are these (but not how many):

Apistos
Rams
Tetras
Danios
cory cat
Dwarf Gouramis
shrimps and maybe dwarf frog
small loaches probably not clowns
a crowntail betta

What else do you guys think?I want some plants too If I can but dont know where to start.

Tank used to be my boyfriends arowana community tank so is well filtered with an Fluval FX5,Rainbow FB900 sand bed filter and a 55g wet/dry.Also several powerheads if I need them.

I need to get it stocked so I can get some pics up!

If you plan to keep shrimps, I wouldn't attempt any cichlids such as the apistos at all unless your tank is really heavily planted. The only loaches that will work well with shrimps are the kuhli loaches and hillstreams although the latter is not an option preferring powerful currents in their environment which none of anything else mentioned would appreciate at all.

Perhaps, just rams, apistos, tetras, hatchets, pencils, african dwarf frogs and pearl gouramis. I wouldn't advise mixing bettas with gouramis. There is always intense rivalry to permit the combination.

So would those filters provide enough current on their own without any power heads?

EDIT @ Spunjin :sorry yes I just saw those were SW.....you had my hopes way up there.... :(

Forget the shrimp as most community fish will eat them.

Disagree on gouramis and bettas. Dwarf gouramis and bettas will ignore each other.

There are reasons for not keeping either in a community tank though.

Male dwarf gouramis, the ones readily available, will seek and destroy each other no matter how big the tank.

Male bettas of course will do the same thing with each other and the other fish (pencils, tetras, danios, etc.) will nip their fins.

In such a large tank, the fish that I would suggest you take advantage of are rainbowfish. There's a wealth of color and interesting behaviours. Males are the most colorful, but females of most species are pretty as well. They swim throughout most of the tank leaving nothing but the extreme top and bottom unoccupied.

A large group of loaches, maybe yoyos since they don't get that big, and a good school of hatchets would cover the upper and lower areas.

You could add apistos, some larger tetras like maybe congos, pencilfish, pearl gouramis, and so on as filler to give even more diversity.

dont forget flagtail catfish...great additions for bottom dwellers

i wouldnt keep bettas with gouramis. male bettas will fight with gouramis, and male gouramis will fight as well.

a large school of congos would be aweosme for your tank.

also consider a big school of bosemani rainbowfish.

some day i will get a 250, this 46 has been a crazy adventure, i can't even imagine. anyway, my LFS got a new big boy fish in today, i'm guessing it's a freshie because it was in with some big gnarly catfish. i think they called it a bat fish. looks like a ginormic angelfish. pretty cool.
