My 29g is ready for fish! It took almost a month to get it ready! whew! Anyway I have already asked for tank suggestions. But I still need help. In the stores I have been in many have these African Assortments? How can this be since the water needed for Lake Mawali and Lake Tanganika are so different? Would it be a bad idea to buy fish like these? Are there any other places online to buy besides Armkes and Jeff Rapps?

Actually, Tangs and Malawis will do OK in the same water. As long as its hard and alkaline, they'll do fine.

My concern about the 'assorted african' tanks is that they're usually the same, commonly-found africans (zebras, johannis, yellow labs) you can get anywhere, including WalMart. If you're going to do africans, at least get some of the less common ones.

In your case, with a 29, you really need to focus on dwarf species (e.g., shell-dweller of Lake Tanganyka) and stay away from the larger, more boisterous mbuna and haps. I'm no expert on shellies, but maybe someone will jump in and offer some ideas.

Good luck and congrats on finishing your cycle!

most of the assorted/misc cichlids are africans and need a tank equivalent to a 55g and eventualy even bigger, you should stick witht the dwarfs if u wanted to go with africans but i recommend americans like maybe some a pair of firemoths or a blue acara or 2, maybe even some kirbs or some severums. just depends on what kinds of cichlids u ike.
