29 gal suggestions

Hey guys, just recently got 135 bucks all for spending on fish stuff. So what i got so far is

29 gal tank
food
conditioner
submersible thermometer
air pump tubing

i would like eco complete, med- planted drifwood and rock kinda cavish/hiding place look. i am thinking

a penguin 100 filter
aqueon heater

i would like just, the least amount of spending possible, yet best preformance. any substitutions/suggestions for any of these are what i am looking for and would be appreciated.

If you a strapped for cash, I'd recommend going the Pool Filter Sand route. You can get a 50 # bag for around $7-12 dollars at your local home improvement store. Just make sure it really pool filter sand. It takes a little more effort to rinse it and all but, hey, it's cheap.

I have no experience with penguin filters but I really recommend AquaClears. If you look around, you'd probably find a cheap AquaClear 70-110 around craigslist or other local forums for cheaper than retail.

Most heaters rated for 29Gs cost around $35 bucks. I have an aqueon 200-300watt. I can't remember which.

If you're looking for cheap driftwood, I'd talk to D.S. Drifter. He has tons of awesome wood and I find they are cheaper than pet stores.

ok, thanks a lot man, but i dont know exactly what pool filter sand is and wher to get it, could i get it at lowes or home depot or something? any other suggestions?

There's always the possibility of collecting your own wood. The eco complete itself would put you back 20 bucks or so...I agree with Chris that PFS (or even play sand) is the way to go.

If your tank is planted, i reccomend some Amazon Swords. they look awesome and are good hiding spots for small/medium size fish

You can find some pretty cheap plants here, in the classifieds. Oftentimes there are people selling cuttings for low prices. You may get lucky and just have to pay shipping.

Use crigslist.com or www.Aquarist-classifieds.com they both have cheap use aquarium things for sale.
