Hey guys so at the end if the month I'm moving and taking my 56 gallon tank and I'm bringing my 29 gallon so my friend I'm moving with can upgrade from his ten gallon. He likes fish that would add interest to the tank. He wants to do a planted tank and I would be helping him with it. But I need advice on what he could stock the tank with that would be interesting but still a community tank.

Well, for a 30tall (29gal) you can do a few basic setups. I would suggest some kind of tetra (I like serpea tetras myself) to be a midlevel swimmer in the tank, a gouramis for the upper level, and some cories for the bottom of the tank. You could also do a bristlenose or bulldog pleco in the tank as well, since you have driftwood.

Ok thank you! Anymore ideas? I will run these stocking ideas by my friend since I will be taking care if his tank part time and he doesn't know much. ( I got him into the hobby and he's been in it for a little more than 6 months.

What are the parameters of the source water (tap or well, whichever)? A lot of ideas for a tank like this will involve wild caught fish, so it pays to know what may or may not work.

Generally speaking, for taller tanks you want less active swimmers. Length is more important to these fish, whereas the sedate species tend to do fine in taller tanks.

Byron.

If I had another tank of that dimension, I would try hatchetfish, ember tetras or microdevario kubotai, a colourful small pleco, lots of attractive moss, a color variation of the cherry shrimp.

My current 29g has a blue gourami, 8 neon tetras, 1 silver molly, and 5 green cories. I think it looks good. I have high ph 7.8 and low kh of 2 but I havent had any pH swings and even though the neon tetras prefer lower ph, I have had them for over a year and they are still doing well. Could it shorten their lifespan? I do not know but they look healthy.

That's a real nice mix Dom. Similar to what I had when I had a 29g. I've got 8 2yr/old neons myself. I've never messed with the pH on account of them, but try to keep the water temp cooler. It's said that Neons like cooler water temps. High 60's, real low 70s.
