I got a 29 gallon starter kit a little over a week ago.. Top fin. Anyway i got it because my 10 gallon was too small... I have 3 platy's 2 gold barbs 5 neons and a small Bala shark. I know the Bala has to go and I'm working on that but, for now hes doing really good ( i think). My question is Am i good as far a fish amount or can i get a few more? If so, what are some suggestions? I know you guys must get 100's of questions like this but, Im a total newbie! Im just getting back into this. My first tank was me and my brothers 10 g way back in `81-`82? and i remeber all the "cool" fish always died except for the 3 goldfish that lived for years!

A minumum tank size for a full grown bala shark is 70 gallons. If you can get rid of him somehow you can add more fish. You want to use the whole tank so mabey some otos for the botttom. You could get a couple of dwarf gouramis and you could get a couple african dwarf frogs. They're really cool. So yes you can put a little more in but make sure you don't overcrowd.

yeah if not for the bala shark you could fit a few other small fish in a 29. the dwarf gourami would be a good idea, or bolivian rams can live in a 29. they tend to stay near the bottom, so they shoudln't interefere with the platys and such.

since the balas's getting the boot, you could try a bristlenose pleco as a nice bottom feeder. all the algae eating power in a compact ( 4"-6") size! of course, you need to feed more than just algae! things such as algae wafers and just about any organic table veggie works.

You could get a few more Barbs or Neons. They are always happier when kept in a large group. How big is your Bala Shark? A small Bala Shark isn't going to be a big burden on the bio-load. When it gets bigger then it will need a new home. Yes you said you were going to take care of that so I think your fine getting a few more fish.

Then the Bala is fine. Not a big burden on your bio-load yet.
