How much should i be paying for a new 29 gallon tank? My LFS charges upwards of 150$ for a complete setup, im looking for a tank, and a hood. I like to have my own choice in equipment such as heaters and filters. My main problem is LFS are too expensive and online shops make shipping the tank not worth it. Ill probably fork over the money for the tank but what about the hood? Im looking for a long hood that covers most of the tank, not just a light strip. Also, since incandescent hoods are much cheaper I wanted one of those, i will be using a compact fluroescent which works very well for me. However, i have not found one yet that is big enough for a 29 gallon, only for about a 10.
If someone could advise me on a hood choice thatd be great.
As for inhabitants im thinking about
5 zebra danios?
5 cory cats
4-5 fancy guppies

Could someone recommend a commonly found, pretty, and hardy middle tank fish? IME guppies usually stay more in the middle than top, but thats just in my 5 gallon. Im looking for a SMALL algae eater and some middle fish.
Thanks

i'd recommend you make a very detailed list of everything you want in your tank. then compare that with the cost of a "kit" at your lfs. i bought a 29 gallon kit from my lfs. the kit included tank, substrate, filter, heater, chemicals, fish food, hood, lighting, and a lot of other stuff.

i could've saved a little bit of money by buying the items piecemeal, and if i did more research before buying i would've recognized the need for better lighting and substrate. the lights won't be suitable for a planted tank so i'll have to upgrade that eventually. same with the substrate.

hope that helps.

do dianos get along with guppies? dianos might nip their fins...

I saved money buy getting a smaller lfs that didn't have the size tank I wanted. I got them to order me one, I'm sure they marked up a bit but not too much, I'm not sure what the going rate on tanks is though. I think stuff is much cheaper online, usually 50%-75% cheaper than lfs, namely bigalsonline.com they are really cheap. They don't sell large tanks, but they sell everything else, highly reccomended. Don't get some premade "kit" that has everything, those "kits" usually have cheaper/lesser quality brands that aren't as good as other stuff you could get at bigals, like Eheim, Marineland, Fluval, EboJager, etc.
As far as tank mates, I like tetras. I have 5 neons and 5 glowlight tetras in my 55 hex. Along with 3 corys, 4 guppies(not so fancy), and a few ghost shrimp. The tetras are very colorful and have a few comptatible varietys like cardinals, black neon, lemon, and others. The shrimp help to break down waste food and a little bit of algae. I also have 1 black mystery snail, it eats a lot I think, mainly brownish-green algae but some waste food as well.

You could also try Google searching by zip code. For a 55 gallon, every store in my area, from chain to mom % pop want $150-200 for the tank only.
Through google search I found a petstore about a 20 min drive away that would give me one for $90.00. If you have the gear like pumps, filters, lighting, definately check around for shops in a reasonable drive from you and call them up. Good luck.

LFS sells a 37G for $80 (hood + tank only)....
Walmart sells a 29G kit for $100, I think it's rebranded Hagen (therefore All-Glass tank??), includes HOB filter, fluorescent hood, submersible heater (I think).... it's not a bad price...

Really? Thanks for all the info guys. That wlamart kit sounds awfully good (for the price) although i hate kits. I am dead set on the new penguin bio-wheels and a visitherm heater. THe rest is and give and take. I doubt the walmart kit has that but do you know if its got a hood also?
Dolfan, In your opinion are tetras easy enoguh? I really like neons howver i heard they are pretty hard to keep and im interested in mainly hardy community species...I heard jumbo neons are easier? Might be expensive though...Glowlights sound tempting though...

neons arn't hard.. some at the lfs are crappy and some will die, but what you will end up with wont die unless you get a run of ich.. and after you buy your fish you can irradicate that by the steps in the ich article in the article section...

i have 3 of the walmart 29 kits comes with every thang but plants gravle and fish for 99.99
