I have a 10 gallon tank set up in my 6 month old daughters room. this week, we had to use the vicks voporizer for her congestion. three of 6 fish have died. Coincidence? or has the vicks voporized them? the 2 cats are still doing well. and there is a tiger barb that seems to be all right. its partner in crime is gone, and so is Elvis and Presilla (the 2 Angels). Thanks in advance for any info.

It is very likely the Vicks may have killed them but we need to know more about your tank:
How long has it been set up?
How was it cycled?
Water change schedule (how much, how often)?
Ammonia
Nitrite
Nitrate
pH

Coincidence? Maybe... Pufferpunk is on the right track, you should test your ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH... what exactly does the vick's vaporizer do? What chemicals are released? If it is just a humidifier then that is not what killed your fish.

Were the vapors drifting into the area of the tank? I find it hard to believe than an airborne agent from a vaporizer would effect the fish, unless the material was introduced to the water through an open top or something...

It's not hard to believe especially when insecticides, paints and other harmful chemicals can have their fumes contaminating the water.

Do you use airpumps as well?

I would think the concentration of vapors in a small room might be enough, especially if you are running an air pump and injecting them onto the tank.

An airborne agent like vicks in a vaporizer could well be the culprit. If you must use such a thing in the area where the aquarium is located you could shut off any air pump and make sure the tank is full so the filter splashing will be minimized. Then cover the tank as best you can to keep fumes from the water surface. It won't make it safe but might save some of the fish. I have gone so far as to drape sheets over aquariums when painting to keep the fumes from penetrating as easily to the water. I'm convinced that it helped but don't really know.

The tank has been set up for several months, the ph was good. just added the fish this month. i do have an airpump. it is a 10x 11 room. and I havent had to change the water, since the fish were just added. I think i covered all of the concerns/ questions from above.

Thanks in advance for the input.
