The guy from th lfs shows yet again how ignorant some fishsellers can be. In my mind if he cant keep guppies alive for more than a few days I would seriously question the rest of his methods and the state of his fish. Guppies are a relatively hardy fish and will easily live for up to two years or more. Female guppies easily become stressed by multiple births and by males so for more relaxed fish either keep your male female ratios very low(atleast 1:4) or seperate sexes completely.
Maintain good quality water in the tanks and feed them live food regularly if possible.
