30 Gal tall?

wow..you can put 10-15 guppies in there if guppies is all you are gonna have..guppies get to about 1.5 inches when fully grown

just don't make a habit of saving all the babies. trying for a 100% survival rate will overstock you in no time.

According to The Simple Guide to Freshwater Aquariums, you can put 24 in a 29 gallon long, but the surface area of a long tank and tall are different, so I would say what got2envy said, which was about 10-15 guppies, although I think the tank would be better for a pair of angelfish.

i kept guppies in a 29 for a while, and it was a nice little ecosystem.. plants of all sorts growing wildly out of control and blooming flowers out of the water, tons of guppies, (they kept the fry culled by themselves), and ghost shrimp cleaning up after everyone.

I would do about 10-15. Dont worry about trying to save the hive though. Start with like 5, and get some generations built up in there. After three or so generations of platys you will be fully stocked. Then there should be enough fish to where they will.... feed themselves.... lol.

lol. Thanks guys. I already have about 18-20 adults that are just split up between several different tanks - i bought a larger tank to consolidate... i wouldn't have gone for the tall except this lady was unloading it and a very nice wooden stand for $50, which is a pretty nice deal.

I'm hoping to get a little java moss and a few cherry shrimp to run around on the bottom, so it's a work in progress and on a budget, but exciting nonetheless.
