30 gallon ideas?

I have a planted 30 gallon with some schooling community fish in it and I don't care for them all that much I guess im just a cichlid nut at heart but any way just wondering what you all would suggest for something a little but more unusal for a 30 gallon that would do alright with plants. Digging shouldnt be much of a problem as the substarte is large gravel.

How about a pair of Orange Chromides (Etroplus maculatus)? Just add a little salt to the tank because they like it a little salty. They grow to about 3 inches (7.5cm). They are very pretty.

if you like cichlids what about some dwarf cichlids? Apistos and rams are very pretty, and at least the rams ought to do good in a planted tank if you don't want to start from scratch.
 
Haha thanks rose have the rams going strong in the 20 gallon now. Im really not sure what I would like to do with the tank. Im leaning towards possibly some honduran red points or who knows maybe just leave it alone. I really just would like something a bit more on the rare side.
This tank is always a thorn in my side I must have changed it around 5 times in 7 years lol. I dont know what it is about it but Im just never happy with it.
 
What length? 30"? 36"? HRPs should work ok in a smallish tank if you can find a pair; I'm not sure how well they'd work out if not paired. Mine were pretty tough on each other, so I actually have one in each of my three tanks. My female didn't like either of the males I brought home. Of course she was older and bigger, so maybe that had something to do with it. I'll try them again when the males are more her size.

At the moment I have a 36" with a rainbow, a smallish male harp, a spinosisimus, some tiger barbs (5), and a pair of clown loaches. Everybody seems to get along ok, but I wish the rainbow was a orange morph - Sure would like to have a pair of THOSE!
 
A pair of Apistogramma cacatuoides double red would work out great. They would love that size of thank, and their colors are amazing. There is a guy who sells them on aquabid.com that has great fish. That is what I am going to do when my 30 gallan planted tank comes up for rent in 10 years or so. My humpback puffer is renting the space out right now.
 
you might not think of them them rare but what about a red zebra (male). they are easy to come by but think of it have you ever seen one full grown? they are beautiful!!
