My son has just bought a 30g long tank and wants to have a lake malawi mbuna setup. I was planning on using a RUGF aswell as the fluval 3 filter that came with the tank. Our tap water has a PH of 7.6 and is hard (not sure how hard test kit ran out getting new next visit to LFS). Will his tank be big enough for mbunas if so how many and what type would be best to go for.

Thanks Steve.

Good link thanks very much Coler.

Steve.

You could keep a small number of mbuna in a 30g long. There is about 432 sq. inches of surface for them to claim territories. That's ample room for a few good fish.

I would stay with smaller, more peaceful species however, as those are somewhat closer quarters than a very large tank would be.

Maybe yellow labs and some acei.

Your water is okay but I would go a little higher. Just add some crushed coral to one of the filter chambers. That will keep things nice.
