Hi,

I am finally attempting to keep a school of cories. I'm excited because I managed to get ahold of some super soft/fine sand. And I've always enjoyed watching cories school. I'd like to get 15-18 cories. Not sure what species--maybe panda but I've always liked Sterbai. But skunk cories are cool. And peppered cories are really cheap :) I'd also like to get 3-4 bristlenose plecos, because they are just cool. To move around higher up I'd like to get 8-10 ghost catfish. Would there be room for a few apistos as well?

My gut reaction is that I'm crazy and should stop with the cories and plecos. Because 40 fish in 40 gallons is....ambitious. To put it mildly. And since a breeder isn't tall, higher up doesn't mean anything anyway. But getting someone else to say I'm crazy with my initial plan sometimes brings me back to reality. I mean I could go with a tiny group of cories, but that kind of misses the point of having an eye-popping cory school.

If the "extra" fish are crazy, no biggie, since I have at least one other tank for apistos to go in. In that case, though, I don't really have a good place for the ghosts--guess I should get another tank!

Cheers,

The footprint of a 40 breeder could easily support 18 corys and a centerpiece fish or two. ;)

I think the ghost cats might be overdoing it, but I think you'd be ok with a pair of apistos and the cories. I'd maybe stick to two bristlenose instead of four if it was me.

The Apistos are bottom cichlids and may need some bottom space too.

IMO, get the corys, and glass cats, and skip the Apistos. If you MUST have BN plecos, then get 2-3.

^yup. It's like I'm following you to promote your posts tanker, lol. Glass cats and corys would be super dope, man. The apistos will want their bottom space, and might cause a stir among your corys.

My understanding is that apistos really don't like corydoras, and will harass them. Must see them as a threat to eggs and fry. But 20-25 corydoras would be great in a 40 breeder. I've done it.

This is my understanding, too: they see the corys as a threat. Maybe gouramies as a centerpiece, instead?
