I have a 40 gallon tank - 30 inches long, 24 high and 12 wide that I picked up off of Craigslist for $20. It looks like a "tall" style.

Do you think it's suitable for a tiger barb tank? If so, how many?

I think it's a 37 gallon tank. Tiger barbs would work. I like tiger barbs in species only tanks, they tend to be a bit nippy. If you only want the tiger barbs I'd say 15 or so.

I will try to do so. I really need a digital camera!

It was formerly a salt water tank and looks pretty clean except for some dust and some minerals. I plan to clean it tomorrow and test it for leaks for at least 24, maybe 48 hours, then set it up. I have to get my husband to build me a stand for it. He said he would this weekend.

I am trying to get the fish soon as they are on sale at petco.

There are large and small ones. Which would you suggest? Is it better to get them smaller and grow them out in the tank or start with the larger ones?

I would get them small and watch them grow. That way you start out with less bioload and they get bigger as the tank matures.

I heard muratic acid is good for cleaning leftover coraline and scale when converting from salt to freshwater.
