I have only 10g tanks right now, but I'm fancying the idea of getting a larger tank. I like the "long" tanks because they tend to be not too tall. The 20g long seemed like a good choice, but I found what I think is a 40g breeder with lights (typical black housing one) for 50 dollars in my area. Is a 40g breeder tank visually appealing and practical for small tetra-sized fish? Also, is this a good deal? I'm only considering it because I think it's a good deal.

How about a 40g long? This one has odd dimensions, 48" x 12" x 16". It's almost twice as long as the 10g and only 2 inches deeper than a 10g!

you will find alot of people who like the 40 breeder because of it's depth and foot print make it ideal for planted tank and smaller fish.

I want to make it planted and have a lot of small fish. So, does that look like a 40g breeder?

Looks like a 40 gallon breeder to me, but if you choose to buy it...measure it. I went to buy a 45 gallon tank and it ended up being a 35 gallon breeder.

cant tell from the picture i know you put the dimensions of the 40 long but do you know the dimensions of the tank you're looking to buy? a 40 breeder is about 36x18x16.

I've never seen the 40g breeder in person, but the dimensions seems much more "proportional" than the long version. If I can find a good stand for it, I'd go with the 40g. Otherwise, I have counter space for only a 20g long. I like the dimension of this because it's not tall. I put my hands in my 10g tanks all the time, and I don't think I want to put my entire arm to reach the bottom of the tank, lol. 16" is probably the tallest I would want my tank to be.

So, is 50 bucks for that a good deal for this? Also, how much should I be looking to spend on a decent new or old stand?

I go by the rule of a dollar per gallon. So $40 dollars for a 40 gallon breeder. Just consider the other $10 the payment for the lights.

Hm, I should totally buy this then. The only down side is that since it's a large tank, I won't be able to set it up until June when I move into a house (apt-living at the moment). I can't pass up on a good deal!
