40Gal tank setup help

Hello im not "new" to saltwater aquariums but recently my entire tank got wiped out from Brooklynella a type of saltwater ich. This happened cuz i was an idiot and did not have everything i need so b4 i start up again i am asking your help.

Say all i have so far is a 40Gal rectangle tank what do i need to turn that into a perfect home for my new fish and corals


Sorry if this seems stupid or odd or me just being lazy but after losing all my fish i want to be careful. Anyway thank you :D :D
 
Live rock (or a combo of live and base/dead rock), sand substrate, a good protein skimmer, enough powerheads to give you atleast a 15-20x per hour circulation rate and lighting (how much depnds on what kind of corals you want). Add to that a quarantine tank (this would have prevented your ich problem), the tools wich are nessisary for maintenence and enough time spent establishing and cycling the tanks, then your good to go.
 
Why not just use the tank you already had up and use the stuff in it? With no hosts the ich will die off in 30 days. Take the problems out of your current tank instead of setting up a new one.

I plan to use everything i have its just i did not have a UV staralizer and never knew i needed one so i guess im just wanted a check list i could use to make sure i have everything i need
 
A UV sterilizer is unneisisary and is not a sure fire way to prevent parasites. Actually, a UV sterilizer can be quite harmfull as it kills EVERYTHING wich goes through it and does not only kill the bad things - it kills the good guys as well.


Use a quarantine tank and you shouldn't have any parasites entering your tank in the first place.
 
Really so should i not get a UV sterilizer?

Also could some1 explain what you do with a quarantine tank? I get that its a stepparent tank but is it a freshwater tank to kill parasites in? or do u just leave the fish in there for a week b4 putting him in your tank to see if it dies or starts to show signs of something?

Can ich just appear, or does it have to be introduced?
 
It has to be introduced. After it is introduced, it may seem to disapear and come back until it is killed - just part of ich's life cycle.
