Hello. I was just thinking....because one of my newts died (i've had it for about 3 years so I'm assuming it had a good run I hope  )

Are there any small fish or other amphibious species that are interesting to have that I could keep in there? I havent had good experiences with getting a new newt after an old one dieing.

what I have in the tank now are lots of fake plants, medium sized gravel, spots to hide, wall plants so they can get out of the water, the tank is about 3/4 full and covered with a screen. I have a small 5 gallon underwater filter, and currently have 3 dwarf albino coryadora and 2 black neon tetras along with the newt.

maybe getting anything else would be crowding it?

I'm really looking for a unique hardy creature that would do for these conditions. thanks for you time.

I definately think adding more would be crowding the tank, but you can always get another tank ;)

The cories will outgrow the 5 gallon since they grow up to 3 inches and love to have space, and the tetras would like extra space as well. I suggest that you take the fish currently in your 5 gallon and trasnfering them to at least a 10 gallon, and just keeping a newt and maybe a few feeder guppies in water.

The people at www.caudata.org think that almost any species mixing with newts is bad. I agree that goldfish would not only nip at them, but also get to the food much more quickly than the newts. I have ghost shrimp who manage to steal earthworms from my newts. Yo Loach, I want to congratulate you on a three year run for your newt. I'm finding out that newts are harder to keep than fish. You must have taken really good care of your newt to keep him that long.
