Hi all,

I rather stupidly have purchased a small 5g tank for cold water setup. Without actually knowing anything about CW fish !!

I kept a tropical aquarium before but am clueless about goldfish.

It was a gift for my daughter.. thinking that we could keep maybe 2 goldfish.

Then of course I read and discovered how big goldfish get !!! :duh:

I read about small fish such as white cloud.. but then is this also cruel ?

plus if I do go with say 1 goldfish and a snail.. how long before I will need to upgrade to a bigger tank ? just how quickly to goldfish grow ? Im hoping youre gonna say I can use this tank for 8 months - year ???

Thanks in advcance !!!!

put nothing in this tank unless you have filtration and a heater, and even then, i would still be hesitant to say a betta; but DEFINITELY NOT A GOLDFISH AT ALL; THEY ARE NOT FIT FOR THIS TANK AND IT WILL NOT WORK FOR GROWOUT AT ALL; DONT DO IT.

just my 2 peso's

yes of course its got a filter.... I wouldnt be that cruel... I just never thought about a heater.. I was thinking coldwater would be cheaper to run.

Please tell me I could at least put snails or something ?

get a heater and you can then put a betta and a snail in your tank, or 3-4 white cloud minnows.

I agree... here are some good setups:

#1: 3-4 white clouds and a snail or two.
#2: A betta and 3-4 ghost shrimp or snails (I would get a heater for that...)
#3: An invert tank! 4 ghost shrimp, 3 snails.

This is a perfect betta setup for this guy's daughter. Why would you be "hesitant" about it?

get a group of hillstream loaches! and if u have 30g+ u can get a pair of dojo loaches. these are coldwater fish and yes they need a filter

Yeah, why hesitant? Bettas are perfectly fine in 5gal.

I have a story to tell you.

When I was 6 yrs old, I bought a 1/8 gallon bowl for a betta (I didn't know better!) and he lived 2 1/2 yrs. until he jumped out. I never even used AquaSafe or anything and I cleaned the water every two weeks. That doesn't mean it's right to put a betta in a tiny bowl, but they can survive it. And I've had bettas that lived in 1 gallon bowls and they LOVED it. I think they'll be able to survive a 5gal. and like it.
