55 gal tank

Oscars should obtain a minimum size of 12''... same width as the tank. Since he doesn't already have the fish, why subject an oscar to it if there are plenty more suitable species?

"Just Fine" is a relative term, and I wish it would stop being used in regards to animals... I guess I could live "just fine" in my .5 bathroom, but I wouldn't be happy...... dogs do "just fine" on purina dog chow until they develope coat funk or kidney problems or whatever... or act like they are 15 years old when they're only 4...

Animals didn't choose to domesticate themselves, that makes it our responsibility to provide them with the best domesticated habitat we can. If that means planning ahead and not stuffing any old fish in there, I don't think it's too much to ask.

datdude, kudos to you for researching :). I wouldn't keep cons and jewels together personally, and I would only keep a single pair of either specie.

What kind of dog food do you feed? Just wondering and no I don't feed purina.
 
would one jack dempsey and one green terror work together? O would you want a pair of single species. The only thing is that i dont want any breeding so it would have to be two males.

I have a Green terror and 2 Dempseys in one of my tanks. At the moment they seem to be getting along pretty well. Time will tell as they mature. They have only been together about a month. I would guess the Green terror and the largest Dempsey are about 5 inches. The female Dempsey is maybe 3 inches.

I'm Wondering about the guy who posted earlyer in the forum with all the fish in the 55. He was saying he enjoyed the tank for a few months. I was thinking he may have had a tank full of babies. As they started growing thats when the fighting would break out. I bet they were 1-3 inches at that time. I bet he is running into some trouble now. At least do to this topic he will know why.
 
GTs really get too big for 55g, around 12'' which is the same width as the tank.

Dempseys get a bit big for a 55g as well.

A pair of salvinis would look nice as well and are more colorful than cons or jewels.
 
wow long reading. Spose you kind ask for it when you ask them what they would do. Just go with what you think is the best looking fish for their size, I have seen many exellent specimens in "tank that are too small". TbH I think dwarfs, kribs and keyholes would be an underkill, you can get a much larger brighter fish in there. I have a pair of keyholes in my 30", and they are happy as, always coloured up. Surprising to see noone said severums was bad idea, they do get quite chunky I have seen a massive on in a 55gal that could barely turn around, but I do have a pair of my own, gold ones grow slower so buy the time I get my upgrades (6ft tank) it should be all smooth sailing. I think for beginner cichlid. Convicts are def the way to go, maybe a couple of normal ones and a couple of albino ones. I think they can be a benchmark for other cichlids in relation to breeding, aggression and maintainance. But get some juvi's then you can really watch and learn the wonderful world of cichlids. VOTE 1 for Convicts....my fry have hatched yippie!
