Well, as the title says, I finally cycled my 55 gallon tank. Yeseterday, Ammonia was at zero, nitrites at zero, and nitrate at 20. I did a fishy cycle, and didn't lose any of the 6 zebra danios that did the job. I knew they were hardy, but I never knew they were virtually indestructable. I never saw a single sign of stress or disease, they just keep playing and chasing each other through the plants.
So, my tank being cycled, I went to the store. I was going to buy a P. senegalus senegalus (Senegal Bichir), but then I saw the P. ornatapinnis (Ornate Bichir) which is normally $55 on sale for $13!! I had wanted a beautiful ornatapinnis, but the price deterred me, until now. So I bought a little 2-incher who seemed very active, and took him home, to the dismay of my mother. ("You bought a worm? That's disgusting! A swimming worm! I'm gonna flush him!!) But hey, its my tank, I think they're beautiful animals, so I got him. (Don't worry, I'm also going to let my mom pick out a "pretty" colorful fish, and she still has my ten gallon community) I expected him to be fairly skittish at first, but he isn't at all. If I put my face or hand near the tank, he will swim right up to it.
After he got settled, I did a fairly large water change, just to make sure all the parameters are good. Everything seems fine, and the bichir is doing swimmingly
.
Well, if you're still reading this, thanks for taking the time to do so. I'll try to post pictures, and if anyone's interested, I will keep updating. Also, I'll keep updating the link in my signature as I get new fish (or if there is any other change).
