Well, as the title says, I finally cycled my 55 gallon tank. Yeseterday, Ammonia was at zero, nitrites at zero, and nitrate at 20. I did a fishy cycle, and didn't lose any of the 6 zebra danios that did the job. I knew they were hardy, but I never knew they were virtually indestructable. I never saw a single sign of stress or disease, they just keep playing and chasing each other through the plants.

So, my tank being cycled, I went to the store. I was going to buy a P. senegalus senegalus (Senegal Bichir), but then I saw the P. ornatapinnis (Ornate Bichir) which is normally $55 on sale for $13!! I had wanted a beautiful ornatapinnis, but the price deterred me, until now. So I bought a little 2-incher who seemed very active, and took him home, to the dismay of my mother. ("You bought a worm? That's disgusting! A swimming worm! I'm gonna flush him!!) But hey, its my tank, I think they're beautiful animals, so I got him. (Don't worry, I'm also going to let my mom pick out a "pretty" colorful fish, and she still has my ten gallon community) I expected him to be fairly skittish at first, but he isn't at all. If I put my face or hand near the tank, he will swim right up to it.

After he got settled, I did a fairly large water change, just to make sure all the parameters are good. Everything seems fine, and the bichir is doing swimmingly ;).

Well, if you're still reading this, thanks for taking the time to do so. I'll try to post pictures, and if anyone's interested, I will keep updating. Also, I'll keep updating the link in my signature as I get new fish (or if there is any other change).

Sounds good.

Just remember you'll be limited in what fish you can put in there with the birchir.

I have senegals and they have grown about an inch a month. It won't be to long, maybe another 4 months until your danios become food for him.

take special interest in post # 25. It names fish that are okay with senegals might be the same as ornates, though I don't know their temperment. Check out our sponsors forum, they specialize in preds.

Thanks for the link. Its kind of ironic, I am also thinking about getting some rainbows, but I need to find out how big their mouths can open.

I think ornates have pretty much the same temperament as Senegals, maybe a bit more aggressive, and they get a couple inches bigger.

Its good to know that a lot of the fish I'm considering for the tank were included in that list you posted in the link. :)

You realize of course the ornate should outgrow the 55 in about a year two at the most?Other than that great buy-Anne

A cpl inches? Polypterus ornatipinnis has the potential to reach 20-24 inches -Anne

Heh I'm with your mom. I think I would have nightmares if I had a bichir.

Anne, I realize that it will eventually outgrow the tank.

I used "couple of inches" loosley, although most things I've read that most don't get more than 20 inches in captivity.

Very loosley lol, 20 inchs is still a whole lotta fish as its mostly muscle-Anne
