I have a 55 gallon tank that is currently unstocked. the specs are 48x20x13. I would like a decent sized fish, but I want more than one. My tank is not nearly big enough to house two oscars, green terrors and the like. Would I be able to get away with Convicts and Firemouths? If so, how many (assuming they grow to full size) can I successfully keep without overcrowding? I would appreciate any responses.

Maybe it’s best to check your tab water first on pH/GH and choose cichlids based on that.
African Rift lake cichlids for example, prefer water with relatively high pH.
PH 7.6-8.4 for cichlids from Lake Malawi and pH 8.3-9.3 for LakeTanganyika cichlids.
Cichlids from Central or South America prefer pH somewhere between 6.5 and 7.6
As for size, I would not choose for cichlids, which grow bigger than 4”or 4.5” max.
How many depends on which species you’re going to keep. So let us know which you prefer.
Hope you can do something with this.
