Hi everyone, I first started off with a 25 gallon nano reef tank and I would like to upgrade to a 55 gallon reef set up. I have researched, and put together a stocking list, and I would like to know if these species will be compatible with eachother, and if I am over stocking or not. also can anyone tell me the order in which I should introduce into the tank? plz dont throw too many criticism at me. i am still learning, and it is my first time going on into a bigger reef set up with more fish.

1 yellow tang
2 percula clowns
1 purple firefish
1 royal gramma
4 blue-green chromis
2 skunk cleaner shrimp
possibly carpenters flasher wrasse or diamond goby
(one or the other)

A 55g would be too small for a Yellow Tang, they are active fish that need plenty of room to swim. Other than that your stocking looks good, not overstocked IMO. Since all your fish are peaceful the order in which you add them shouldn't matter much, usually though you add the most peaceful fish first and the more aggressive last.

I agree, a yellow tang will not do well long term.
I have a similar stock in my 55 with no problems.
I would add them in the following order:
Firefish
clowns (same time)
chromis
royal gramma
I have the following which seems to be reasonable and not overcrowded:
coral beauty
maroon clown
canary wrasse
2 chromis
goby
The reef takes up alot of swimming room, so better to stock on the lighter side. IMO
Good luck.

i agree

the yellow would be fine at first but would contribute a lot to your bio load you could have one as a juvenile but as it hit 5 inches itd have to be gone

Hmmmm. Are all tangs not suited for a 55? Because I would really like to keep one..... Are there any other types of tangs that I can keep?

Alright mate put the yellow tang in their will be no probs ive got a few mates with them in and they have smaller tanks then that. I know everyone says you need them in a bigger tank but thats for the bigger tangs i think.

A small yellow tang would probably be fine to begin with but if your looking at long term an adult needs more room. Tangs love to cruise so the need the space, and since they tend towards being aggressive a bigger tank is better. Also its more about tank length than volume, I have read of them being okay in a 4ft tank but better off in a 6ft. There are no hard and fast rules with fish, but most people would probably say you'd need a bigger tank.

I think the yellow tang is one of the smallest species. A bit of info here http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/aquarium-fish-supplies.cfm?c=15+43

Yellow is fine as a Juvenile. But, should I suggest a Yellow Eye Kole Tang?
