I have had my 55 gallon tank running for 4 months now and had jewel cichlids in their. I recently got rid of them cause they were just hiding in caves and not being social what so ever. So now I just went out and got 6 green tiger barbs, 6 black skirt tetras, 3 australian rainbows, 6 emerald cory's, one kribensis, and a chineese algae eater. The ques is can I have room to upgrade maby the rainbows to six total, or maby a couple more barbs or tetras? Any and all responses are appreciated thx.

The barbs will probably pick on the rainbows and may tear the fins of the tetras. You sort have picked a community/Semi agressive fish stock. Keeping the barbs in a school may help. Stocking wise you are fully if not a little over. The australian bows get 6" and the emerald cory do get big by cory standards so you do not have space. You may want to think about choosing commonity or semi agressive fish. An all barb tank can be great or an all rainbow tank are also great. Good luck Zach

How many Jewel cichlids did you have in there to begin with? If I counted correctly, you added 23 fish after you got rid of the cichlids. Did you add them all at the same time? If so you need to keep a close eye on the water parameters to see if you get an ammonia or nitrite spike. If so, then be ready to do a water change ASAP if necessary. From the looks of it, you are now fully stocked and I would not add anything else to the tank at this time.

Hi,
Thank you for all your replys. When the cichlids were in the tank I had 7 full grown jewels, two pictus catfish, and a pleco. The tank was running for 6 months and well established. I have been doing weekly water changes since I started up the aquarium. I just bought API ammonia, ph, and nitrite test kits. The ammonia is 0 ppm, nitrite 0 ppm, and ph is about 6.9. So I think all is doing well now and the fish will be fine.

you don't really have too much room for more fish but more tiger barbs will help spread out aggression within the school and should keep them from picking on the other fish.

I agree about the CAE. As they mature, they can be a real pain. They will bother all of the other fish in the tank and do little or nothing for the algae in your tank. I would re-home as soon as you can to avoid any potential problems that could arise in the future.
